November 11, 2008, marked a day of remembrance in Trenton, New Jersey, at the unveiling of the state’s first and long-awaited World War II Memorial. Designed to pay tribute to the estimated 560,000 men and women from New Jersey who served in the armed forces in World War II, the memorial also honors the sacrifices on the home front which helped achieve U.S. victory.
Located in Trenton on West State Street opposite the New Jersey State House, the $7.6-million New Jersey World War II Memorial features more than 8,000 square feet of Charcoal Black® granite as a key building material, used for columns, sculpture bases, steps, paving, amphitheater seating, story walls and more. Granite was selected for its durability and long lifespan.
Granite’s durability and long lifespan achieved the goal of creating a lasting, public memorial. Granite is a key element in the existing area; as such, Charcoal Black granite provided a natural complement to the surrounding architecture. The memorial contains two granite story walls, measuring 12 feet high by 40 feet wide. These story walls provide a historical background of the war effort with graphics, a timeline, photography and other images to tell the story of the efforts made by the front lines as well as the home front.
A high level of collaborative effort and teamwork helped ensure the landscape architect and owner’s goals were met. Preparing precise shop drawings and being responsive to the landscape architect and owner helped meet any challenges. Working with the installer, contractor, design team and the owner throughout the entire project ensured everything was being performed and managed correctly.
