Located in Poughkeepsie, NY Health Quest’s flagship, Vassar Brothers Medical Center, built a 696,000 SF, inpatient pavilion with 264 private medical/surgical patient rooms and 30 critical care rooms that will solidify its place as the destination of choice for patients in the region. The eight-story building was originally slated to rise only seven stories, but with space in mind, and after further evaluation of community needs, another floor was added. It is believed to be the largest construction project in the City of Poughkeepsie to date.

The pavilion’s distinctive curved shape follows the aesthetic of the adjacent Hudson River. The building was designed and constructed to not only maximize patient care and comfort, but to deliver environmental benefits as well. A myriad of sustainable design elements are featured throughout, including natural stone.

The general contractor, Walsh/Consigli Joint Venture, came to Coldspring with concerns over the specified granite color not meeting the schedule for the project. Coldspring quickly responded to their need sending several samples before they settled on a domestic color with a honed finish that dramatically highlights the stone’s crystal structure that would meet the desired time schedule. For the exterior cladding, a honeycomb installation system was determined and Coldspring shipped approximately 60,000 SF of granite to their sister company, Stone Panels International, who produced the aluminum honeycomb backing for the light-weight stone panels utilized in the project.

The stone selected for the project, Mesabi Black® granite, provided an ideal complement to the other materials selected for the building such as glass, metal and concrete. Another aspect of this job was 29,000 SF of cut to size material that consisted of building base, wall base and wall coping. The integration of natural stone with other materials on the façade of this project is a testament to beautiful modern design.

A beautiful outcome was accomplished at every stage of the project by the skilled, well-coordinated team. The positive impact this medical facility will have on the Hudson Valley region will be a legacy for years to come.
