Wacker DriveWacker Drive, a historic 1920’s two-level roadway that travels alongside the main branch of the Chicago River and bears the addresses of many of Chicago’s notable landmarks, is bustling once again after a 4-year reconstruction. The purpose of the reconstruction was to replace the existing deteriorated structure and to widen the street to accommodate current vehicular standards and traffic movements. The challenge was to upgrade the structure while preserving the defining characteristics of the architecture.

Extensive research, site visits, and analysis of the original material’s color, finish, and weathering allowed Coldspring to develop several options to present to the design team. Carnelian® granite combined with a custom finish was the material chosen for its similar physical performance and visual match of the existing material.
